NEW YORK, NY- According to brooklyneagle.com, two car accidents took place on Thursday morning on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge leading to several people being injured, and long traffic delays for morning commuters.
The FDNY reported that they were notified of a multiple-vehicle crash at about 5:41 in the morning. The incident occurred in the Brooklyn-bound lanes in the bridge’s upper level. Two individuals sustained injuries in the crash. The injured persons’ conditions are not known. One person was taken to the Maimonides Medical Center, and the other was transported to the Staten Island University Hospital.
According to a witness, the crash involved a vehicle rolling over, and two of the occupants of that vehicle were trapped. The FDNY extracted the people from the damaged vehicle.
A second collision was reported at about 6:22 on the bridge’s lower level. The second crash also involved multiple vehicles. One person sustained injuries in the second crash and was brought to the Staten Island University Hospital.
The two collisions caused express buses headed towards Staten Island to become delayed.
Rush hour traffic and congested roadways increase the risk of car accidents taking place. There are just more vehicles on the road to hit one another, but drivers are also often experiencing boredom, drowsiness or frustration, all of which can potentially lead to dangerous driving behaviors.
It is important for drivers to remember to remain alert and never drive while looking at a phone or electronic device. Aggressive driving is also dangerous and includes speeding, tailgating and other behaviors that are often the result of drivers losing their tempers. It is important to remain calm even in heavy traffic.
