More Cribs, Toy Helicopters Recalled

Jun 27, 2008 | Parker Waichman Alonso LLP

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in collaboration with the two companies cited below, has issued recalls on yet another crib and another toy helicopter.

In the first recall, approximately 1,200 full size 2nd Nature Built to Grow cribs, made in Slovenia by Stanley Furniture Company Inc. of Stanleytown, Virginia, are being recalled because the cribs fail to meet federal safety standard for crib dimensions.  According to the CPSC, “When the mattress support is in the middle setting, the space between the mattress and the crib could be too wide, posing an entrapment hazard to infants.”

The recalled crib—which retailed for about $1,100--is  made in natural maple, with model number 353-14-220 and was sold at department and furniture stores from March 2006 through December 2007 and involves serial numbers:  353-14-220-L-01, 353-14-220-L-02, 353-14-220-L-03, 353-14-220-L-04, 353-14-220-L-05, 353-14-220-L-06, 353-14-220-L-07, 353-14-220-L-08, 353-14-220-L-101, and 353-14-220-L-103. The recall does not include cribs sold after December 2007.

Model and serial numbers can be found on the crib’s headboard.  Consumers should immediately stop using the crib in the middle mattress setting and adjust it to the low or high setting and should contact Stanley Furniture to determine if the crib is subject to this recall, and if so, to receive a free replacement crib headboard.  For additional information, contact Stanley Furniture toll-free at (888) 839-6822 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or at the firm’s Website at www.youngamerica.com

In the second recall, about 102,000 "Thunder Wolf" Remote Controlled Indoor Helicopters, which were manufactured in China and imported and distributed by Westminster Inc., of Atlanta Georgia were recalled because the toy’s internal rechargeable battery can overheat and cause the helicopter to melt, posing a risk of fires and burns.  To date, Westminster has received seven reports of overheating or melting, including one report of flames and two reports of property damage.

The “Thunder Wolf” remote-controlled indoor helicopter is made of foam and plastic, and measures approximately seven inches by three inches. “TW0996” is printed on the tail of the helicopter and was sold in multiple accent colors. The helicopter comes with a controller and a separate charger. Only helicopters that do not have “Made in China” stamped on the underside of the helicopter are subject to the recall.

The helicopters were sold at retail stores nationwide between June and December 2007 and retailed for approximately $20.  Consumers should immediately stop playing with the recalled helicopters and contact Westminster Inc. for a refund.  Retailers will not accept returns or provide a refund for this recalled toy.  Westminster Inc. can be reached at (800) 618-0023 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET Friday; visit the company’s Website at www.thunderwolfhelicopter.com or send an e-mail to info@thunderwolfhelicopter.com.

These are not the first such reports of faulty cribs and dangerous helicopter toys to be recalled in collaboration with the CPSC and the law firm of Parker Waichman has reported on a wide variety of recalls concerning entrapment hazards in cribs and fire hazards with toy helicopters this year alone.
