Amputation Hazard Prompts Another Stroller Recall

Jan 28, 2010 | Parker Waichman Alonso LLP

For the third time since November, a company is recalling   defective strollers  that can cut off children's fingers.  This new recall involves 1,100 CYBEX strollers made in China and distributed by Regal Lager Inc.

In November, MacClaren USA, Inc. recalled about a million single and double umbrella strollers after it had received 15 reports of children placing their finger in the stroller’s hinge mechanism, resulting in 12 reports of fingertip amputations in the United States.  Just last week, Graco recalled 1.5 million strollers for the same problem. Graco said it has received seven reports of children placing their fingers in the stroller’s canopy hinge mechanism while the canopy was being opened or closed, resulting in five fingertip amputations and two fingertip lacerations.

Fortunately, the CYBEX  strollers haven't cut off anyone's fingers, but a ccording to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC),one child did sustain a finger fracture after placing his finger in the stroller’s faulty hinge mechanism.

This recall involves Ruby, Onyx and Topaz models of CYBEX umbrella strollers. “CYBEX” is printed on the side of the strollers. The recalled strollers were sold at department and juvenile product stores nationwide between August 2009 and November 2009 for between $140 and $260.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled strollers and contact Regal Lager to receive a free hinge cover retrofit kit. For additional information, contact the Company Service Center at (800) 593-5522 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or visit the firm’s Web site at www.regallager.com/recalls – consumers can also email the firm at info@regallager.com.
