Acne Drug Unsafe for Pregnant Women
Aug 22, 2003 | AP Former "American Idol" contestant Carmen Rasmusen says she used the prescription acne drug Accutane to stop a skin breakout recently. But the Utah Health Department has a warning for women about that drug it causes severe birth defects.
The Health Department says doctors won't prescribe the drug to women who are capable of becoming pregnant unless the women are on at least two forms of birth control.
Health workers say the problem is that teens and young women sometimes share the drug with friends. If those girls unexpectedly become pregnant while taking the borrowed medicine, serious birth defects will result.
