2 more Mich. salmonella cases linked to peanut butter

Feb 26, 2007 | Detroit Free Press Two additional cases of salmonella contracted from contaminated peanut butter have been confirmed in Michigan, bringing the state's total number of ill people to seven in an outbreak that has sickened 339 people nationwide.

The cases were confirmed last week in residents of Oakland and Montcalm counties, T.J. Bucholz, spokesman for the state Department of Community Health, said today. Neither person is hospitalized, he said.

In January, another Oakland County resident contracted salmonella, and there was one case each in Macomb and St. Clair counties. Mason County reported two cases. Two people were hospitalized, but have been released, Bucholz said.

Nationwide, people in 41 states were sickened by the peanut butter, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

All are believed to have eaten Peter Pan or Great Value Peanut butter. The CDC in Atlanta advises consumers to throw away jars with a product code beginning 2112. Lids can be returned to ConAngra Foods, maker of the brand, for a refund.
