In the January 2016 edition of the Jama Internal Medicine, researchers noted over 15 million people use prescription PPIs, but warned that up to 70 percent of these patients could be treated with a different medicine.

Up to 25 percent of those patients who have been taking PPIs for a long time could stop using the medication without having the same problems.

Patients who use PPIs are 20 percent to 50 percent more likely to develop kidney failure side effects than non-users, warn the study authors.

In May 2015, a study published in the Journal of American Society of Nephrology showed an increased risk of kidney failure in Nexium users as well as chronic kidney disease for long-term users of Nexium and other PPIs.
