Boston Diocese to Turn Over Papers

May 29, 2002 | AP The Boston Archdiocese was ordered to turn over records on sexual abuse allegations against 11 priests to a man who sued the Rev. Paul R. Shanley.

Attorney Roderick MacLeish Jr., attorney for Gregory Ford, said he believes the archdiocese records will show a pattern of moving priests facing sex abuse allegations from parish to parish.

Middlesex Superior Court Judge Raymond J. Brassard on Tuesday ordered the archdiocese to hand over the documents by the end of the week. Ford, 24, claims that church officials failed to protect him from repeated sexual abuse by Shanley.

Shanley, who is now retired, was arrested in San Diego on May 2 and has pleaded innocent to rape charges involving another boy.

Brassard also ordered the release of the transcript of Cardinal Bernard F. Law's deposition in the Ford case as soon as it is reviewed by the stenographer when his deposition ends June 7.

Archdiocese lawyer Wilson D. Rogers III called the request an attempt to "harass, annoy and embarrass the diocese."

All of the 11 priests for whom records were requested are dead or have been removed from their posts.

MacLeish is scheduled to question Law and some of his former top aides next week on their roles in supervising Shanley and dealing with allegations of abuse made against him. Brassard said transcripts of those depositions could be released after they are certified by a clerk.
