BRITISH STUDY FINDS SMOKING INCREASES RISK OF AGE RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (AND SUBSEQUENT BLINDNESS) IN OLDER ADULTS

Jun 5, 2005 | www.Newsinferno.com

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in the elderly. Now, a study published in the may issue of the British Journal of Ophthalmology has found clinical evidence that smokers are twice as likely to develop AMD as non-smokers. Ex-smokers, particularly those who had stopped for more than 20 years, were not found to be at any significant increased risk. The researchers estimate that some 28,000 cases of AMD in older adults in the UK may be attributable to smoking.
