Deadly Bus Crash in Newark Killing a Bus Driver and a Grandmother

Sep 29, 2016

On Friday, August 19, at approximately 6 a.m. at North Broad Street and Raymond Boulevard in Newark, one bus T-boned the other, probably at high speed. The deadly New Jersey Transit bus crash claimed the lives of a bus driver and a passenger who was on her way to work, reports WABC Eyewitness News.

One of the buses was broken almost in half, and one bus driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The bus driver’s Route 59 bus was empty, but the bus he crashed into was not. It was a Route 13 bus with 17 passengers on board. One of those passengers, was a 49-year old woman of Newark. She was rushed to the hospital, but died a few hours later. The woman was on her to her job at the time of the crash. She was the grandmother of three, WABC News reports.

"She was a hard worker, got up every day, six days a week to work," a family friend said. "She got up at 5 a.m. every single day to go make an honest living and to come home and live the simple life."

Eighteen people were injured, six critically. The crash tipped the occupied bus at a 30-degree angle as it came to rest on a median. Many passengers were entangled in twisted metal seats and were covered in shards of glass when the force of the crash tipped the bus. Some of the passengers were trapped and had to be rescued. Firefighters were seen pulling passengers through a side window and loading them onto stretchers that were waiting and into ambulances, reports WABC News.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka stated that the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
