For Some WTC Rescue Workers, VCF Registration Deadline is October 12, 2014

Sep 30, 2014

The deadline to register with the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) is approaching quickly for some rescue workers. Claimants must register by October 12, 2014 if they were diagnosed on or before October 12, 2012 with one of the cancers added to the list of eligible conditions on that date.

WTC rescue workers and first responders can register by filing online, or submitting a hard copy Eligibility Form. Individuals can also fill out and submit an Interim Registration form, which requires follow-up actions, if neither of the first two options is possible. Registering with the VCF is not the same as filing a claim for compensation. Registering simply preserves the right to file a claim in the future if needed.

Claimants who were diagnosed with prostate cancer on or before October 21, 2013 have until October 21, 2015 to register, The PBA Beat reports. Claimants diagnosed with a cancer categorized as a “rare cancer” on or before February 18, 2014 must register by February 18, 2016.

The VCF, which was reopened for another five years by the James Zadroga Act, provides compensation to WTC rescue workers who suffered 9/11 related illnesses and injuries. The Zadroga Act also created the World Trade Center Health Program to monitor and treat 9/11 victims. As many as 65,000 participants are involved in the WTC Health Program, New York Daily News reports.

Currently, the VCF and WTC Health Program are due to expire in October 2016 and October 2015, respectively. Lawmakers have introduced a bill to reauthorize the Zadroga Act, which would keep the VCF and the WTC Health Program open for another 25 years.

The number of people diagnosed with a 9/11 related cancer has more than doubled to over 2,900, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). According to 9/11 Health Watch, rescue workers have been diagnosed with prostate and thyroid cancer, leukemia and multiple myeloma at a significantly rate than the general population. Asthma, obstructive pulmonary disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease and a number of other conditions have also been linked to 9/11 toxic dust exposure.
