Ford recalls 2006 SUVs and pickups for wiper motor problem

Nov 17, 2005 | Louisville Business First

Ford Motor Co. recalled nearly 200,000 Ford sport utility vehicles and pickups for potentially faulty windshield wiper motors.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration said the company is recalling 2006 model years of the Ford E-150, E-250, E-350, E-450, Escape, Expedition, Explorer, F-150, Ranger and Taurus; Lincoln Mark LT and Navigator; and Mercury Mariner and Mountaineer.

The NHTSA said in some of the vehicles, the windshield wiper motor may have been produced without grease being applied to the output shaft gear. When used on the high-speed for continued periods, the gear can break and stop operating, which could lead to reduced visibility and a crash.

The recall recommends owners of the affected vehicles to take their vehicles to a Ford dealer for inspection starting Nov. 21.

Dearborn, Mich.-based Ford (NYSE: F) builds Explorers and Mountaineers at its Louisville Assembly Plant. The recall does not affect models built by the company's Kentucky Truck Plant.

Earlier this week Ford also recalled the about 300 Lincoln Navigator SUVs for potential problems with the automatic transmission guide plate; 123,000 of the 2005 models of the Ford Five Hundred, Freestyle and Montego for potential issues with the fuel tank assembly; and about 98,800 of the 2005 models of the Ford Crown Victoria, Lincoln Town Car and Mercury Grand Marquis for potential problems with the battery cable.
