Fresh Express Recalls 32-Ounce Chopped Romaine Packages that May Contain Undeclared Allergens

Feb 11, 2016
Fresh Express Recalls

Fresh Express Initiated Recall

Fresh Express Incorporated has initiated the recall of a limited quantity of 32-ounce packages of Fresh Express Chopped Romaine because some packages may contain undeclared allergens.

Fresh Express is working with stores that received the recalled romaine to have the packages removed from store shelves. According to the recall announcement, no other Fresh Express products are included in this recall.

Fresh Express announced the recall after learning that that sealed condiment packets of dressing, croutons and Parmesan cheese intended for inclusion in Fresh Express Caesar salads were mistakenly placed in some 32-ounce packages of chopped romaine. Ingredients in the individual packets include milk, eggs, wheat and fish, which are all potential allergens. Though the individual sealed packets are enclosed in another sealed packet, Fresh Express recalled the chopped romaine to protect consumers from exposure to undeclared allergens.

Product Code Recalled

The recalled 32-ounce bags of Fresh Express Chopped Romaine have the product code G034A06A, and use-by date of February 19 located in the upper right hand corner on the front of the bag. The UPC code 0 7127926100 3 is located on the reverse side of the bag by the bar code. The recalled packages of chopped romaine were distributed in Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Virginia.

Fresh Express described this as an “isolated event” and said that all Fresh Express products with condiments that may contain allergens are properly labeled in accordance with the law. Fresh Express is investigation this event in coordination with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is implementing steps to prevent future occurrences.

Fresh Express advises consumers to discard any packages of the recalled chopped romaine they have purchased. Consumers may obtain a refund from the place of purchase or they may contact the Fresh Express Consumer Response Center toll-free at (800) 242-5472 during the hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
