Government To Study The Effects of Lariam

Apr 27, 2004 | News 14 Carolina

The government will study the side effects of a drug given to thousands of soldiers to prevent malaria.

The Defense Department and Veterans Affairs Department will study the effects of lariam. The drug is routinely prescribed to soldiers working in countries where malaria is a problem.

Some people blamed the drug for causing psychotic reactions including depression, hallucinations and thoughts of suicide.

It was suspected as a factor in a series of murders and suicides involving Fort Bragg soldiers in the summer of 2002.
