Hearing Today For Accused Priest

Jan 9, 2003 | Rockford Register Star

A Catholic priest who served at a Belvidere parish last year appears in court today on charges he sexually assaulted a girl four years ago in a Chicago suburb.

The Rev. Mark Campobello, relieved of his priestly duties after his arrest in December, is expected in Kane County Court this morning for a status hearing on his case.

Police charged Campobello with five counts of criminal sexual assault and five counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Police believe the crimes occurred in early 1999 when Campobello lived at St. Peter Parish in Geneva. At the time, he was working as assistant principal and spiritual director at Aurora Central High School.

Prosecutor Jody Gleason, who is handling the case for the Kane County state’s attorney’s office, said she still didn’t know whom Campobello had hired as his lawyer.

She expects the priest and his lawyer to show up this morning for a short hearing. The case then will be assigned to a trial judge and a court date will be set.

Campobello, 37, is out of jail on bail. Before going to Belvidere, he served St. Peter and Holy Family parishes in Rockford and Holy Angels in Aurora.
