House Sends Bill Banning Supplement To Illinois GovernorMay 16, 2003 | AP
A bill to ban over-the-counter sales of the herbal supplement ephedra is headed to Gov. Rod Blagojevich's desk.
The Illinois House voted, 117-0, last night to ban sales of the diet supplement linked to the death of a high school football player last fall.
Sean Riggins, 16, of Lincoln died in September after taking ephedra, a stimulant that is popular among some athletes but is blamed for his sudden heart attack. His father, Kevin, is pushing for the statewide ban.
Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler died after collapsing during spring training, and officials linked his heatstroke death to a diet pill that contains ephedra.
