Indicted Priest Faces New Charge

Oct 11, 2002 | The Courier-Journal

The Rev. Louis Miller, already facing criminal charges that he sexually abused 23 children in Jefferson and Oldham counties, was indicted yesterday on another charge.

Miller, 71, is accused of sexually abusing Carson Torpey in 1960 by fondling his genitals in the sacristy of Holy Spirit Church, according to the indictment returned yesterday by a Jefferson County grand jury.

Miller was indicted in Jefferson County on June 26 on 42 charges of sexually abusing 15 children at three parishes, a hospital and a private home during his 46 years as a priest in Louisville. In Oldham County, a grand jury indicted Miller July 18 on 14 counts of sexually abusing eight children while he was pastor of St. Aloysius.

Miller has pleaded innocent to those charges.

His lawyer, David Lambertus, declined to comment on yesterday's charge against Miller.

Miller also has been accused of sexual abuse in 70 lawsuits filed against the Archdiocese of Louisville.

Torpey, 53, owner of a local bicycle shop, filed a lawsuit June 14 against the archdiocese alleging Miller abused him when he was an altar boy.

Torpey said in an interview the alleged abuse happened when he was about 10 years old and Miller called him into the sacristy to congratulate him for learning the Latin he needed to be an altar boy. Miller put him on his lap and fondled him, Torpey said.

The Rev. Louis Miller, left, was indicted on a charge of sexually abusing Carson Torpey in 1960.
