Malpractice Suit Nets $16.6 Million

May 12, 2003 | AP

A federal jury in Bexar County awarded Rebecca Bowman, 27, and her family $16.6 million in one of the largest medical malpractice verdicts in the country in the last two years.

Bowman suffered brain damage when a heart disorder went undetected at Brooke Army Medical and Northeast Methodist in September and October 1998. She's now confined to a bed and requires around-the-clock care in a nursing home.

Bowman blamed Brooke Army Medical Center and Northeast Methodist Hospital for her incapacitation.

The jury found that the hospitals and a doctor are responsible because of decisions and miscommunication among medical staff at the two hospital emergency rooms.
