Mitsubishi, Honda, Isuzu Recall Tens Of Thousands Cars To Repair Defects

Aug 1, 2002 | AP

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said Thursday it was recalling 677,042 mini vans, mostly in Japan, to fix a battery box problem, while Honda Motor Co. and Isuzu Motors Ltd. also recalled vehicles for defective parts.

There were no accidents or injuries reported from the manufacturers as a result of the auto defects, according to Transport Ministry official Michihiro Hirose. The automakers reported the recalls through the ministry.

Mitsubishi said rainwater can enter the battery boxes in Minica and Minica Toppo mini van models produced between Aug. 23, 1993 and Aug. 1, 1998. The problem can cause battery acid to spatter and also decrease braking power.

The recall affects 676,741 vehicles sold in Japan and 301 exported to more than 10 Caribbean countries, including Jamaica.

Honda recalled 41,923 Odyssey minivans, produced from Oct. 21 to Dec. 26, 2001 and sold in Japan, to fix a problem with a vehicle's fuel tank screw, according to the Transport Ministry.

Tokyo-based Honda was also recalling another 565 Stepwagon and S-MX models to fix a defective passenger-side air bag. Of those vehicles, 375 were sold in the United States and 35 in Canada.

Isuzu Motors Ltd. said it was recalling 1,275 Wizard sport utility models to fix a defective pipe to the fuel tank. It also was recalling 438 trucks to repair a defective parking brake.
