NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA) INVESTIGATING COMPLAINTS OF GAS PEDALS BEING STUCK IN FORD MUSTANGS AND SUVsJul 15, 2005 | www.newsinferno.com
The NHTSA has opened an investigation into the uncontrolled acceleration of some Ford Motor Co.’s sport utility vehicles and its popular sports car, the Mustang.
The agency will be investigating reports that the engine throttle became stuck in the open position in Ford Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers, causing unwanted acceleration.
About 690,000 Explorers and Mountaineers from the 2002 model year are involved. NHTSA said its actions in opening a preliminary investigation were prompted by 15 complaints and one reported crash.
The government is also reviewing accelerator pedal interference with the carpet in 2003 and 2004 model Mustangs, 2003Mustang convertibles, and the 2003Mustang GT. In all, 20,000 vehicles are involved. Seven owners who complained said the problem was related to the position, design and installation of the carpeting.
Ford announced it was working in cooperation with NHTSA but that there has been no determination as to what additional actions might be taken by the agency or Ford.
