Nursing Home Staffer Accused of Abuse

Feb 25, 2004 | Pasadena Citizen
Abuse on an elderly

A Staff Member Punched A 72-Year-Old Resident.

A staff member at the Vista Continuing Care Center in Pasadena allegedly punched a 72-year-old resident when she complained about a shortage of supplies.

Pasadena police are investigating the possible abuse reported on Saturday by the nursing facility's administrative director, Frances Paggeot.

Paggeot declined to comment on the details of the incident, but said the elderly female resident is in good condition.

The staff member reportedly struck the resident with a closed fist in the left arm and shoulder area after the woman complained there were not enough adult diapers on hand.

Paggeot Declined To Say Whether The Staff Member Has Been Fired.

The staff member has been employed with the Vista Center at 4300 Vista Road since January. Paggeot declined to say whether the staff member has been fired.

If the Vista Center staff member is charged with assault, the charge is more serious when involving an elderly or disabled person, garnering a Class A misdemeanor offense.

The federal Older Americans Act has been protecting seniors' rights for more than 40 years. The U.S. Congress reauthorized the law in 1992 by creating Title VII, Chapter 3 - a regulatory prevention of abuse, neglect and exploitation of elderly Americans.

The act was amended in 2000 when the U.S Congress called for individual states to better coordinate with law enforcement and the courts system on senior citizen abuse.
