Oriental Packing Co. Recalls Curry Powder Due to Lead Contamination

Aug 16, 2016
Recall Curry Powder

Oriental Packing Recalling Its Curry Powder

Oriental Packing Co., Inc., based in Miami, Florida, is recalling its curry powder products due to lead contamination. The recall affects roughly 377,000 pounds of blended seasoning curry products. Eating food products tainted with lead can lead to serious, sometimes permanent health problems. Lead can build up in the body over time.

The recalled products were distributed to New York and Florida. They were also sold online and in retail stores across the country. So far, there have been no reports of illnesses related to this recall. The recalled seasoning was packaged in 2oz, 4oz, 6oz, 8oz, 22oz and 5 lb sizes.

The lead contamination was identified by the New York State Health Department during a routine sampling program, according to an Aug. 12 recall notice posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) website. The agency is investigating the cause of the contamination. In the meantime, Oriental Packing says it has ceased the production and distribution of the recalled product.

According to Mayo Clinic, lead poisoning can be harmful even in small amounts. Lead poisoning is especially harmful to children under the age of six, resulting in impaired mental and physical functioning. Lead poisoning can be life-threatening at very high doses. Initial exposure to lead may be difficult to identify. Symptoms of lead poisoning typically appear once dangerous levels of lead build up.

Signs Of Lead Poisoning

Signs of lead poisoning in children may include developmental delay, learning disabilities, loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation and hearing loss, according to Mayo Clinic. Adults with lead poisoning may experience high blood pressure, abdominal pain, constipation, joint pain, muscle pain, decreased mental functioning, pain, numbness or tingling in the extremities, headache, memory loss, mood disorders, reduced or abnormal sperm count in men and miscarriage/premature birth in pregnant women.
