Priest Pleads Guilty In 2nd Abuse Case

Dec 19, 2002 | Washington Post A former pastor with the Archdiocese of Washington, who served a prison term for a 1996 child molestation conviction, has agreed to plead guilty to one count of unnatural and perverted sex involving the abuse 36 years ago of another boy, Montgomery County prosecutors announced yesterday.

James Aubrey Finan, 70, is to appear at a Jan. 29 hearing, according to a plea agreement filed in Montgomery Circuit Court.

Finan, who had been pastor of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Laurel, was sentenced to 18 months in jail after his 1996 conviction, which stemmed from a 1966 incident when Finan was associate pastor at Holy Redeemer Church in Kensington.

Finan also was removed from ministry by the archdiocese that year. Since his release from prison, he has been living under supervision in a priest retirement home in the District, a spokeswoman for the archdiocese said.

Prosecutors said that in May, a 43-year-old man told police that Finan sexually abused him in 1966. In August, the man called Finan as police monitored the conversation. According to police, Finan told the victim that he might have abused him but that he couldn't remember.

Finan could face up to 10 years in prison when sentenced.
