September 11 Compensation Filing Deadline Just Days Away

Oct 9, 2014

For September 11th responders and survivors who were diagnosed with certain cancers prior to October 12, 2012, the deadline to register with the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund is October 14, 2014. Those who do not register by the deadline become ineligible for the program’s benefits.

To raise awareness of this crucial deadline, Representatives Carolyn B. Maloney, Jerrold Nadler, and Peter King held a press conference, along with first responders, labor leaders, community representatives and advocates for 9/11 survivors to stress the importance of registering by the deadline, 9/11 Health Watch reports. “If you have been diagnosed with a 9/11 covered cancer due to your exposure to toxins in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, I urge you to visit immediately and determine if you should register to preserve your right to file a claim,” Rep. King said, adding, “We must ensure that our 9/11 heroes receive the care they deserve and are not left fighting alone because of ineligibility.”

Individuals with a qualified condition – certain cancers or other conditions caused by toxic exposure – have two years from the date of diagnosis to file a registration form in order to preserve the right to file a claim, according to 9/11 Health Watch. The claim process is separate, but registration is the first step. Those who were diagnosed on or before October 12, 2012 with one of the cancers on the list must register with the VCF by October 14, 2014. The fund’s Special Master does not have the authority to extend the deadline.

VCF compensation applies to injured and ill 9/11 first responders and survivors from the World Trade Center site, the Pentagon and the Shankesville, Pennsylvania crash site. Those who believe they are eligible for compensation can register at The web site has information about eligibility and the registration process and also has a list of cancers and other health conditions covered by the program.
