Sheboygan County Priest Accused Of Abuse

Jun 29, 2002 | WISN

A 77-year-old Sheboygan County man is the latest Roman Catholic priest accused of sexual abuse of a child.

The allegation dates back more than 40 years, but authorities are moving ahead with the investigation.

It was more than forty years ago, 1959, but what a now 59-year-old man told prosecutors happened in a cabin (pictured, right), still seems fresh, WISN 12 News reporter Nick Bohr said.

"The trauma that he had before has not gone away," Sheboygan County District Attorney Bob Wells said.

The alleged victim told Sheboygan County investigators that Rev. Donald Peters took nude photos of him and fondled him on several occasions in the basement of the home.

While they didn't find any photos, deputies seized a computer during the execution of a search warrant Thursday, but have yet to analyze it.

Peters wouldn't comment Friday, but he's said to have told investigators he took nude photos of three teenage boys in Fond du Lac in the mid-60s.

"It's usually not an insolated incident. We also know that he worked here in Sheboygan at two different parishes in our county. We also know that he has done some work with the Boy Scouts. I think you all know that has to raise additional concerns," Wells said.

Peters served most of his career at St. Clements Church in Sheboygan, from 1950 to 1960 and again from 1977 until he retired in 1993.

"It's now been revealed, though, that retirement came amidst and anonymous allegation of sexual abuse of a child that led to restrictions on Father Peters' ministry. He's been completely barred from even saying Mass in public since this past May," Bohr said.
