The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Opens Investigation of Five Toyota Models for Uncontrollable Acceleration

Aug 13, 2005 |

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation (NHTSA Action Number: DP05002) of several Toyota models because of uncontrollable and unintended acceleration while the vehicle is in reverse.

While a defect investigation often, but not always, leads to a vehicle recall, this case involves a problem with potentially serious consequences.

The NHTSA has already received 13 reports of crashes caused by uncontrollable acceleration resulting from the loss of throttle control while the vehicle was backing out of a driveway. So far, there have been no fatalities associated with the problem.

Complaints involve the Camry, Camry Solara, Lexus ES, Lexus ES 300, and Lexus ES 330 for model years 2000 to 2005.
