Trial Begins for Priest Accused of Molestation

Dec 16, 2002 | WWW.DETNOW.COM

A man who says he was abused by a priest more than 30 years ago took the stand Monday to tell his story. It was the start of testimony for the trial of Edward Olszewski, a Catholic priest accused of molestation.

Opening arguments are finished, and the first witness to take the stand in this trial, Albert Green, Father Olszewski's alleged victim.

With the now 67-year-old priest looking on, Green, who is now 44-years-old, spoke of the alleged abuse that started when he was just 11 while at St. Cecilia's in Detroit.

Green claims the abuse continued for years, and that when his mother got sick, Green went to live with Olszewski.

During cross examination, the defense attorney brought to life the fact that Green has had a number of felony theft convictions on his record, and that he has suffered from drug and alcohol abuse.

Still, Green maintains that despite some problems in his life, it's the alleged sexual abuse that needs to be addressed. He says Olszewski sexually abused him often, and in the church.

Albert Green: "Well, he used to rub on me and that."

Attorney: "And you're saying he did that around the time of morning mass?"

Albert Green: "It wasn't a certain time. It was whenever we were alone."

Attorney: "This could happen any time during the day?"

Albert Green: "Yeah."

Attorney: "Okay, at any place in the rectory."

Albert Green: "Or in the car, he just put his hands there or something."

Attorney: "Anyplace and in the rectory also."

Albert Green: "When there's nobody around."

Father Olszewski is charged with eight counts of criminal sexual misconduct.
