U.S. Congress Still Investigating Ephedra

Apr 9, 2003 | AP

Six more sports organizations were asked by a congressional committee Wednesday for documents on ephedra use.

Congress is investigating dietary supplements containing ephedra, and baseball has come under scrutiny since the death of Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler in February. A coroner said ephedra contributed to Bechler's death from heatstroke.

Last week, the House Energy and Commerce Committee asked for information from baseball commissioner Bud Selig and union chief Donald Fehr on the use of the supplement in baseball.

Wednesday's letters went to the NFL, NBA, NHL, Major League Soccer, NASCAR and the NBA as well as the unions in the team sports. The letters asked for the information by April 23.

Following Bechler's death, the Department of Health and Human Services cautioned that users of ephedra-based products face "potentially serious risks."

The letter was sent by committee chairman Billy Tauzin, R-La., and Reps. Michael Bilirakis, R-Fla., Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., and James Greenwood, R-Pa.
