Wisc. Meatpacker Recalls More BeefOct 10, 2002 | AP A meatpacker that has already recalled more than 2.7 million pounds of ground beef linked to E. coli outbreaks is calling back another 568,000 pounds because of possible contamination.
Peck Meat Packing, a division of Emmpak Foods, said Wednesday that some ground beef processed on Sept. 23 at its Milwaukee plant had tested positive for the bacteria.
The company was not aware of any illnesses linked to the beef, said Emmpak President Justin Segel.
Emmpak began the beef recall late last month after E. coli outbreaks sickened 57 people in seven states, including 35 in Wisconsin, Segel said. The meat was sold nationwide in grocery stores, hotels, restaurants and other food institutions.
Symptoms of E. coli infection include diarrhea and stomach cramps. In some cases, the bacteria can be fatal.
The meat affected by the latest recall was sold in Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Wisconsin.
