According to US News and World Report, a new study done in Quebec has shown that antipsychotic drugs can raise the risk of heart attack in older patients who are currently being treated with dementia and are living in a community setting such as a nursing home or an assisted living.
The increase in risk is modest, and the study did not show a cause and effect relationship, but rather a relationship between the use of antipsychotics in patients older than 66 years old and an increased heart attack risk. The study was published on March 26th of this year, and can be found online at Archives of Internal Medicine.
