A revision surgery on any part of your body gives you a much higher risk for infection and complications than any previous surgery. The patient suffers more bone and blood loss, a longer time to recover, and less chance for a successful surgery.
There have been a number of health studies reporting hip replacement devices failing. Patients are suffering from hip pain, stiffness, and difficulty walking. But as the device begins to worsen, it can loosen up and cause many more problems within the body.
This high failure rate and consumer complaints are coupling together to show why some of the manufacturers of hip replacement devices are being recalled. Metal on metal implants top the list of recalled devices. These implants were hailed to be the most durable devices on the market due to the metal. But the metal is the biggest flaw and has been shown to fail much more quickly than implants made of plastic or ceramic parts. As the metal parts grind against each other as the device moves to give you natural rotation of the hip, metal particles can be released into the blood stream. The metal particles are small bits of chromium and cobalt. The debris can cause a host of issues include clicking of the equipment, dislocation, and fractures.
