Food Poisoning at Denver Food Shelter
July 24th, 2012 tmccoy
Over 50 people went to the hospital recently because they had eaten a turkey dinner served at the Denver Rescue Mission. Many victims became sick almost immediately, and were violently vomiting outside of the Mission after they finished their meal. They were diagnosed with food poisoning. The meat had been donated to the shelter.
The Denver Fire Department is particularly worried about those who have not gotten help even though they have been sickened. There are crews of health care workers who have been searching for those who became sick after eating the turkey. Up to 350 people ate the turkey meal at the shelter.
According to the Mayo Clinic, food poisoning symptoms vary with the source of contamination. Most types of food poisoning cause one or more of the following signs and symptoms:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Watery diarrhea
- Abdominal pain and cramps
- Fever
Signs and symptoms may start within hours after eating the contaminated food, or they may begin days or possibly even weeks later. Sickness caused by food poisoning generally lasts from one to 10 days.
Food poisoning is often caused by Staph, E. Coli or salmonella.
