A sign of bad care is severe weight loss or lack of the necessary nutrition to the residents which many times show up in the blood work ups. Many staff members do not take the time to feed residents that need it or encourage residents to eat when that is all that is needed. It all starts with staffing. A properly staffed nursing home is more likely to provide residents with the assistance needed for proper assistance with eating. If a resident has a compromised nutritional status many common problems are more likely to occur such as malnutrition, dehydration, bedsores and change in mental status which could also lead to accidents. Make sure your loved ones in a nursing home get the proper nutrition and more important the proper assistance to assure meals are fully consumed.
