Outbreak of Rare Eye Infections Linked to Florida Pharmacy

Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned healthcare personnel to avoid using compounded products labeled as sterile from Franck’s Compounding Pharmacy, which were made in Franck’s Compounding Lab. Franck’s Lab has also recalled one additional lot of triamcinolone acetonide P.F. 80mg/ml.
According to federal health officials, Franck’s Compounding Pharmacy has been linked to a mult-state outbreak of a serious fungal eye infections. The Associated Press (AP) reported that officials confirmed 33 cases of a rare fungal eye infection spanning 7 states and originated with the products compounded at the same Florida pharmacy responsible for mixing supplements that caused the 2009 deaths of 21 elite polo horses.
According to newsinferno.com, pharmacies are able to work outside the of the statutory drug approval process by creating drugs via pharmacy compounding.
On March 9, 2012, Franck’s Pharmacy also issued a recall of Brilliant Blue G, a substance that is used during eye surgeries. Brilliant Blue G has been linked to Fungal Endophthalmitis Cases. The recall involved four physicians and five prescriptions.
