Avodart is used to help reduce the chance of developing acute urinary retention (sudden inability to urinate) and also to treat the enlargement of the prostate gland.
Avodart is a dutasteride medication manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2002. Avodart is in a class of medications that the FDA recently issued warnings about. These warnings include that the drugs may carry the possible risk of developing high-grade cancer.
Along with that, Health Canada has also issued a warning regarding the side effects associated with the drug. These results were based on several clinical trials that were conducted regarding prostate cancer events. The drug trials showed that in patients over the age of 50 who used the drug for more than 4 years, were at a higher risk to develop cancer. At this time, the FDA has required the drug manufacturer of Avodart to apply warning labels to their medication so that the public is made aware of the potential risks.
