The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) has warned for some time that finasteride drugs—such as Propecia, for male-pattern baldness, and Proscar, for prostate enlargement—have been linked to an increase in prostate cancer. Now, the FDA is prepared to expand its finasteride warning label to include notifications of problems with libido, ejaculation and orgasms that continue after the use of the ended. In addition, both drug labels will include information describing reports of male infertility and poor semen quality that normalized or improved after the use of the drugs stopped.
Notably, in June, 2011 the FDA warned consumers that the results of a two year study supported the hypothesis that Propecia and Proscar, as well as GlaxoSmithKline’s Avodart and Jalyn drugs, could increase the risk of contracting an aggressive form of ‘high-grade’ prostate cancer. Ironically, Propecia is approved to reduce the risk of ‘low-grade’ prostate cancer.
