Los Angeles – According to NBCLosAngeles.com, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors met on March 19, 2019 to place a moratorium on the use of glyphosate on any Los Angeles County properties. Effective March 19, 2019, all Los Angeles County departments were ordered to stop using glyphosate herbicide products, such as Roundup Weed Killer, until county officials have a better understanding of the environmental impact and potentially dangerous health effects.
L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger initiated the moratorium on glyphosate which is the key ingredient found in Roundup Weed Killer. The ban coincides with a San Francisco jury ruling that found in favor of a plaintiff who filed a glyphosate lawsuit against the makers of Roundup Weed Killer – Bayer/Monsanto.
Los Angeles County is one of a growing number of municipalities that have banned glyphosate on publicly owned properties such as schools, parks, and playground areas. Over the past several years, more than 50 counties and cities in the United States have banned the use of the popular herbicide for fear of dangerous health and environmental effects. In 2017, California placed glyphosate on its Proposition 65 registry of known carcinogens. The following is a link to California’s “Initial Statement of Reasons: Glyphosate Proposition 65 Safe Harbors” published on March 28, 2017.
The CEO of Bayer has stated publicly that Roundup is safe. Defense lawyers representing Bayer/Monsanto have argued that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved Roundup for use without cancer warnings and therefore, Bayer/Monsanto cannot be found liable.
A federal court jury in San Francisco ruled a few days ago that regular exposure to Roundup Weed Killer caused a Sonoma man’s non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In August of 2018, in a similar suit, a California man was awarded over $280 million in damages in his Roundup non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma lawsuit. Currently, there are over 11,000 lawsuits filed against the maker of Roundup – Bayer/Monsanto. These lawsuits allege that the main ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate, is a carcinogen and that the makers were negligent when they did not provide adequate warnings on their product’s packaging.
