June 7th, 2012 tmccoy
In 2011, the Food and Drug Administration received 179,855 reports of serious or fatal adverse drug reactions. 158,853 reports were from manufacturers and 21,002 were voluntary reports. Drug manufacturers are required to report serious events that come to their attention within fifteen days. The number of serious or fatal adverse reactions jumped 9.4% from the previous year.
The 10 drugs that had the highest number of voluntary reports, in order:
- 1. Pradaxa
- 2. Coumadin
- 3. Levaquin
- 4. Carboplatin
- 5. Zestril
- 6. Cisplatin
- 7. Zocar
- 8. Cymbalta
- 9. Cipro
- 10. Bactrim
Only about one percent of the total number of serious or fatal events caused by pharmaceuticals is ever reported to the FDA. Therefore, if you take the 179,855 events that were actually reported, a conservative estimate is that in 2011 there been as many as 18 million serious reactions last year!
