Tragedy struck a family in the Bronx on Sunday as a Honda S.U.V. careened off the side of a Bronx River Parkway overpass and landed stories below in an area owned by the Bronx Zoo. Inside of the vehicle were 3 generations of a single family – 2 grandparents, 2 daughters, and 3 grandchildren- making this tragedy particularly troubling.
Adding to the dismay is the fact that this was not the first accident of this nature to occur on this area of the Bronx River Parkway. Last year, only a yard or two away from where this accident occurred, a car containing two people darted through a chain link fence and became airborne, landing on East 180th street. Fortunately in that accident, no one was killed. The individuals in the Honda were not so lucky, as the crash had no survivors.
Bronx officials now plan to look into this particular area of the parkway and make an official determination whether something should be done to increase safety.
