ADHD Drugs

Injured by an ADHD drug?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) affect children and adults alike and are treated with drugs such as Adderall, Concerta, Ritalin, and Strattera.

Strattera, the only non-stimulant ADHD drug on the market, has been linked to liver damage.  Concerta and Ritalin contain the same active ingredient, methylphenidateall; both drugs are linked to psychiatric side effects including suicidal thoughts, aggression, psychotic behavior and hallucinations.  Additionally, Ritalin may be linked to cancer, and Concerta may be linked to cardiovascular problems.  Adderall may be linked with sudden death and cardiovascular problems.

The FDA announced in June 2005 that it plans to conduct an investigation into all drugs used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

On January 3, 2006, the Food and Drug Administration asked its standing committee of risk-management advisers to review reports of heart-related complications in children and adults using attention deficit disorder drugs. U.S. and Canadian regulators have been looking in the past few years at the probable heart risk of attention-deficit drugs, which are stimulants used to improve concentration.

On Feburary 9, 2006, an FDA panel voted to recommend a black box warning for five ADHD drugs including Metadate, Methylin, Ritalin, Concerta and Adderall.  The Food and Drug Administration scientific committee voted 8-7 to add the warning due to 25 reported deaths between 1999 and 2003.  Nineteen of the 25 deaths were children.  There were 54 cases of serious cardiovascular problems reported in chidren and adults. The drugs included in the warning are thought to increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events including heart attack, stroke, arrythmia, palpitations and hypertension.
