USA- Reuters.com reports that Johnson & Johnson is trying to get a $245 million jury award overturned. The award was granted to plaintiffs who suffered injuries from faulty Pinnacle hip implants. The company complained that the trial was “rife with inflammatory, irrelevant and inadmissible evidence.”
The company filed a motion on Wednesday arguing that the trial was not fair because of confusion resulting from consolidating six cases and from prejudicial evidence.
The hip implants, which were designed out of all metal, have created many problems for patients. A number of companies made Metal-on-Metal (MoM) implants which include several components all made of metal. The all metal design was meant to be studier, less likely to dislocate, have a lower chance of fractures, and not wear down as much as older models of implants, which used plastic that was known to wear down over time. The longer lasting models were intended to be beneficial to younger patients who still had a more active lifestyle. In reality, the devices created a host of new problems.
Patients who received these types of implants can experience symptoms including “pain, swelling, numbness, and/or change in ability to walk.”
The metal components grind against one another, which can cause them to release toxic metal into a person’s system causing a condition called metallosis.
Patients who experience complications from their metal hip implants often have to undergo a second surgery to have the first implant removed and replaced. One problem is that the revision surgery is more complicated than the first surgery, presents greater risks and can involve longer recovery periods.
