Exposure To Toms River Polluted Air and Water Linked To Leukemia. Prenatal exposure to polluted air and water in this Ocean County community is linked with unusually high levels of leukemia in girls, state and federal health officials announced yesterday after a comprehensive five-year study.
Claims Against Companies
The findings, released days after dozens of families settled their claims against three companies for an undisclosed amount, stopped short of declaring that contaminants caused the girls’ cancer.
The researchers said pure chance could not be ruled out as an explanation. No associations were found between the pollution and cancer in boys. Nor were links found for other cancers, such as those of the brain or nervous system, that also are unusually high in the area.
