NORTH PORT, Fla. — A three-car accident left two people with varying degrees of injury. Mysuncoast.com reports that the crash happened on U.S. 41 in North Port around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 26, 2018. The crash left one driver seriously injured and another with relatively minor injuries. The third motorist involved was uninsured. Florida State Police troopers concluded their investigation into the accident and issued a motor vehicle violation to the operator who caused the crash. Incidentally, he was the driver who suffered the most severe injuries in the collision.
Florida State Police troopers say that 69-year-old Louis Cochia caused the three-car pileup. Troopers concluded the Mr. Cochia was driving northerly on U.S. 41 near Ortiz Boulevard. The vehicles traveling in front of Mr. Cochia started to slow down, and he did not stop in time. Mr. Cochia rammed his Chevrolet Corvette into the rear of one stopped car. That crash propelled the second car into the first car.
Troopers, along with emergency medical technicians responded to the incident. They found Mr. Cochia badly injured. Also, troopers learned that the 61-year-old driver of the second car, a man from North Port, had minor injuries. Medics transported both to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Their current physical conditions are not known at this time. The 67-year-old man from North Port driving the third car involved did not report any injuries at the time of the crash. It is unknown whether he subsequently sought medical treatment on his own.
Florida State Troopers cited Mr. Cochia for driving carelessly. The troopers did not say whether when he must appear in court to answer the charges if he chooses to contest them.
U.S. 41 is a major thoroughfare in an area in which the accident happened called Warm Mineral Springs. U.S. 41 runs from Venice on the west coast of Florida to Fort Myers.
