The fatal collision between a box truck and a pedestrian happened on the North Service Road and Chapman Boulevard immediately adjacent to the Kurt Weiss Greenhouses, Inc.’s property in East Moriches. Suffolk County did not indicate why 49-year-old Julia Molina was off of the property when she was hit by the box truck. Suffolk County Detectives did say that an employee of Kurt Weiss Greenhouses, Inc. was driving a box truck in reverse when the truck hit Ms. Molina.
The operator of the box truck stayed at the scene of the crash and cooperated with investigators. Suffolk County Police Homicide detectives at the scene temporarily impounded the box truck to perform a safety check. The deceives likely examined whether the brakes were in good working order, the mirrors were in place, and whether the truck was equipped with a backup signal, among other safety features. Police did not say whether the truck was in proper working order.
Local fire and EMS responded to the scene in addition to Suffolk County police. The injured woman appeared lifeless. Consequently, they contacted the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office. A physician’s assistant employed by the M.E. arrived at the scene and pronounced Ms. Molina dead. The police say Ms. Molina resided in Mastic at the time of her untimely demise.
Examiners from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) received information regarding the industrial accident. Federal law requires the employer or a person designated by the employer to contact OSHA in the event of an industrial accident. OSHA may conduct its investigation into the fatal crash.
