HICKSVILLE, Long Island, N.Y. — A 26-year-old man died in a horrific crash with a parked tractor-trailer truck. The man who passed away was the front seat passenger in a van operated by another who police claim “fell asleep behind the wheel.” The tragic collision occurred around 5:40 a.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2018, in Hicksville according to New York Newsday. Nassau County Police investigated the accident initially. They will continue to investigate the incident. The police have not said if they will charge the driver with motor vehicle homicide.
Nassau police say that 26-year-old Eric Faucault of Elmont was a front seat passenger in a 2014 Mercedes van Thursday morning when the driver of the van fell asleep while operating on Broadway near Lee Avenue. Nassau police have not identified the driver. The operator lost control and plowed into the rear-corner of a Volvo tractor-trailer truck that was parked on the side of the road. Police did not comment whether the truck driver was in the tractor at the time or whether the driver parked the truck legally on the side of the road.
Witnesses told police that Mr. Faucault emerged from the heavily damaged van and then collapsed in the road. Medics rushed him to a nearby hospital. He died at the hospital. Medics also took the driver of the van to the hospital for a precautionary exam.
A photograph of the crash scene depicts a horrific site. The photo shows the rear corner of the trailer protruding through the windshield of the van. The driver’s side of the windshield is intact, but the passenger’s side is demolished. The van appears to have impaled itself on the corner of the truck. The driver’s front end of the van is lifted off of the ground, and the passenger side seems to have gone under the rear of the tractor. No skid marks appear in the photograph.
Nassau police will perform an analysis of the safety equipment on the van.
