In our "Year-end Roundup" Newsletter (December 2000 - January 2001), we gathered together many of the record number of products for which warnings or recalls were issued in 2000. Unfortunately, 2001 appears to be headed in much the same direction. For that reason, we are taking this opportunity to present a review of over 70 products which have already made the recall list for 2001. This does not include additional warnings and recalls involving prescription drugs, toxic chemicals, foods, pathogens and other dangerous substances which will be dealt within greater detail in later Newsletters.
If you or someone you know is in possession of one of the products discussed below, the best thing to do is stop using it immediately. This is especially true with any product on the list that is designed to be used by children. Once this has been done, you would following the instructions which may include: calling a specific Hotline; returning the product for repair or replacement; obtaining a refund or repair kit; discarding the product. In no event should you disregard the warnings simply because the product appears to be functioning properly or because it is new or unused.
Clearly, some of the products pose much greater risk than others. This is no reason, however, to take unnecessary chances with a potentially defective product. Even the least dangerous product is capable of inflicting a painful or otherwise serious injury.
