A San Francisco priest is scheduled to appear in Marin County Superior Court next week to face a charge that he molested a child 30 years ago.
The Rev. Gregory Ingels was charged by the Marin County district attorney on May 12 with one count of oral copulation with a then-15-year-old student at Marin Catholic High School in Kentfield.
The alleged abuse dates to 1972, according to published accounts, when Ingels was an instructor at the school and was invited to a gathering of the youth’s family in Muir Beach.
“Father Ingels has an excellent reputation in the church and a history of helping people,” said Ingels’ attorney, Arthur Wachtel. “He is very well liked and respected, and it is unfortunate that an issue that is over 30 years old is now being raised.”
In addition to being an ordained priest, Ingels is a canon lawyer who served in the San Francisco Archdiocese’s tribunal office, which administers the process of annulments.
