USA- Producer.com reports that Bayer is fighting against the $289 million jury verdict awarded to a California man who supposedly developed cancer after being exposed to glyphosate. The company claims that glyphosate, the main ingredient found in Roundup, is perfectly safe and that the verdict should be overturned or reduced because the evidence used in the lawsuit was not sufficient to prove that the cancer was the result of exposure to glyphosate. Bayer has said that they will appeal the verdict.*
The plaintiff’ Dewayne Johnson, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2014. The verdict was the first awarded in relation to cancer being caused by Monsanto’s popular weed killer. When the news of the verdict was released, Bayer’s shares dropped by around 20 percent.
By the end of 2018, of early 2019 at the latest, Bayer will have faced many more of the 8,000 pending lawsuits that were filed in relation to Roundup and cancer.
Bayer purchased Monsanto earlier this year for $63 billion dollars. The ruling has reportedly caught the pharmaceutical company off guard. Monsanto vehemently denies that their product causes cancer and claims that there are decades of studies indicating that the product is safe for humans.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stated that glyphosate “probably” not a human carcinogen. The European Union chose to extend a license to the herbicide for another five years.
Roundup is a significant source of revenue for Monsanto. Bayer has stated that they do not think the verdict will impact the sale of glyphosate products in the short term.
According to expert’s Bayer’s intended appeal of the California verdict will be “an uphill climb.”
