USA- Usatoday.com reports that Walmart issued a recall of Ozark Trail’s camping axes. The company says that 246,000 axes are subject to the recall. The decision to recall the product is based on a risk that the ax head can become unattached from the handle leading to potentially serious injuries.
Walmart sold the axes both in store and online between January 2017 and July 2018. The axes were prices at around $8.
The affected axes have a non-slip grip, are about 14 inches long, weigh around 1.25 pounds, and are marked with “Ozark Trail” and the number 60111140, both of which are printed on the handle of the ax as well as on the packaging.
There have been two reports of injuries related to the defect. The injuries included minor abrasions and cuts. Walmart is offering a full refund for the product.
Recalls are issued when a product on the market presents safety risks to consumers. The recall can be issued by the company that makes the product, or by the government if the product is a health or safety hazard.
Sometimes recalls only prevent a product from continuing to be sold, other times the recall requests that consumers return the product or take it in to be repaired. In some cases, there may be a simple fix that can make the product safe for use.
The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is responsible for protecting the American public from unreasonable safety risks associated with thousands of consumer products. Once a product is subject to a recall issued either publicly by the manufacturer, or by the CPSC, selling that product becomes a violation of federal law.
