Last week, it was reported that Victoria's Secret had received hundreds of complaints from women who said the company's bras had caused serious skin problems, including allergic reactions, contact dermatitis, blistering, itching, hives, rashes and scarring.  According to those reports, some Victoria's Secret bras had tested positive for the presence of formaldehyde, which is sometimes used in the textile industry to make fabrics crease resistant.

Clothing allergies are not unusual, and formaldehyde in fabric is often a culprit.  The symptoms of formaldehyde skin reactions include eczema-like skin eruptions, blisters and hives.  When serious, these reactions can lead to permanent and disfiguring scarring.

The latest Victoria's Secret bras lawsuits were both filed by Parker Waichman Alonso LLP, a personal injury law firm with offices in New York, New Jersey and Florida.   The first lawsuit was filed in US District Court for the Southern District of Florida Palm Beach Division.  The New York Victoria's Secret lawsuit was filed in US District Court for the Eastern District of  New York.

Both lawsuits were brought on behalf of women who claim they purchased and wore undergarments or intimate apparel from Victoria's Secret.  As a result, the women suffered skin reactions, hives, scarring and other problems.  Both lawsuits allege that Victoria's Secret misrepresented the safety of the apparel it sold.   They also charge that Victoria's Secret Stores knew or should have known the undergarments/intimate apparel were defective, and failed to warn of the dangers posed by the products.

Parker Waichman is seeking class action status for both lawsuits to represent all consumers in the U.S., New York and Florida who purchased defective undergarments and intimate apparel from Victoria's Secret.  In statements announcing the suits, Parker Waichman said it had been contacted by hundreds of women who have suffered skin reactions after wearing Victoria's Secret garments.

Victoria's Secret has admitted to receiving complaints from women who suffered skin reactions after wearing the company's bras, but maintains that it does not use formaldehyde in the manufacture of its clothing.

Victoria's Secret Bra Injury Lawsuit
In 2008, an Ohio woman filed suit against Victoria's Secret, alleging she became “utterly sick” after she wore her new Angels Secret Embrace and Very Sexy Extreme Me Push-Up bras.  In her lawsuit, the plaintiff said the rash she suffered was "red hot to the touch, burning and itching." 

A lab test of Victoria's Secret bras like the ones worn by the plaintiff showed the presence of formaldehyde in the fabric. Formaldehyde is used in the textile industry to make fabrics crease-resistant.  It is possible that women who have experienced rashes, hives and scarring from Victoria's Secret bras are allergic to formaldehyde.

Formaldehyde Allergy Symptoms
Allergy to clothing is quite common. The reaction is due to the contact of clothing to the skin. People can develop formaldehyde allergy reactions (allergic skin disease and hives) through skin contact with solutions of formaldehyde or non-crease clothing containing formaldehyde.

The symptoms of a formaldehyde skin allergy include:
  • Eczema type lesions at the site of intimate contact with clothing.
