According to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), the Animas insulin pump battery cap recall was a Class I recall.  This is the most serious type of FDA recall, and is issued when a medical device poses a risk of serious injury or death.

While the FDA did not say if any injuries had been attributed to defective battery caps, our Animas insulin pump injury lawyers believe that they may have hurt many patients.  It is a known fact that  incidents and injuries  involving defective medical devices are vastly underreported to the FDA.

Animas Battery Cap Recall

The Animas recall involves defective battery caps included with:

  • All Animas 2020 Insulin Pumps shipped between June 16, 2008 through July 19, 2008
  • All Animas IR 1200 and IR 1250 Insulin Pumps shipped between June 16, 2008 through August 1, 2008
  • All OneTouch Ping Glucose Management Systems shipped prior to August 1, 2008
  • All Battery caps shipped between June 16, 2008 through July 19, 2008

Animas Corp.  issued the recall after it  became aware that some battery caps used on the Animas insulin pumps were not maintaining contact with the pump’s battery compartment. According to the recall notice, when the cap loses contact with the battery compartment, the insulin pump will temporarily lose power.

A power loss can cause the device to stop administering insulin, which could result in an excess level of glucose in the blood (hyperglycemia). Additionally, this failure may lead to user confusion in the amount of insulin administered, contributing to errors in future doses, which may result in lower than normal level of glucose in the blood (hypoglycemia).

If this malfunction  occurs, the pump will give a beep to notify that  it has restarted and the  verify screen will appear.   If  the user does not confirm the verify screen , the pump will begin to alarm within three minutes and the alarms will escalate to the loudest audible setting and vibration alert within an hour, the notice said.

Animas said the pump would not continue to administer insulin until the user takes the  following steps:

  • Disconnect from the pump at the skin site
  • Confirm that the information on the verify screen is correct
  • Complete the rewind, load, and prime steps by carefully following the instructions in the Animas User Guide
  • Reconnect to the pump at the skin site

In order to ensure the safe operation of the pump, and avoid any potential power loss related to this battery cap issue, users of the affected Animas insulin pumps were told to:

  • Immediately replace the battery cap on the Animas insulin pump with the battery cap enclosed with the recall notice.
  • Discard and do not use the defective  battery cap from their Animas insulin pump

Other Issues with the OneTouch Ping Glucose Management System

In addition to the recall notice regarding defective battery caps on some Animas insulin pumps, the company issued another alert  regarding a problem with its OneTouch Ping Glucose Management System.

Animas said  it had become aware that an incorrect bolus total may be calculated by the OneTouch Ping meter-remote when it is not communicating with the OneTouch Ping insulin pump. When the two devices are in communication, all meter-remote calculations function correctly as described in the Owner’s Booklet, Animas said.

Animas said it was sending its customers a letter to alert them to this issue. The company said it would send out  new meter-remotes to customers as soon as they are available. In the meantime, Animas said its patients may continue to use their OneTouch Ping system provided they only use the ezCarb calculator on the meter-remote when it is paired and properly communicating with the pump.
